Guatemalan citizens in protest against Canadian mining companies

November, 2014

Over the past few years, local townspeople in Guatemala have been organizing protests in opposition against the operation of mines, in particular that of Canadian mining company Tahoe resources. The protests came to a head in April 2013, when approximately six protesters were injured after a security firm hired by Tahoe Resources, fired bullets and tear gas onto the crowd.

Clashes between protesters and the mining companies have continued, however in May 2013 the Guatemalan government issued a ‘state of siege’ around the Escobal silver mine, thus allowing Tahoe Resources to resume their operations.
